Present: Trustees- Maureen Donovan and Doreece Miller
Ella Quinn, Marty Heater and Charlie McGettigan
Trustee, Jim Nelson, arrived later
The minutes of April 3, 2007 were accepted. The meeting scheduled for April 16 was cancelled due to the weather.
Concerns were heard from Ella, Marty and Charlie about the Rules and Regulations in effect as of October 30, 2006.
Ella and Marty have family members from all over the country that send money for flowers to be placed on the families graves. Section 4 Part C states, “No artificial flowers on graves are allowed”. They are asking the trustees to give thought to artificial flowers being allowed on the graves. They cannot visit graves every week, family members pay for flowers to be on the graves, the price of fresh flowers is prohibitive, and they would not last long.
Ella is also concerned that some corner stones appear to be missing from a family lot; the Henry and Nettie Tuttle lot near the tool shed at Laurel Hill. We will ask our custodian if he can locate them. They may have been buried with soil over the years.
A question about flags for veterans was brought up. Why aren’t they placed on the graves of ALL veterans? Since this is done by the Boy Scouts or the Legion, the question should be brought to their attention.
Marty requested that the Rules and Regulations be posted at each cemetery as information for those who may not be aware of the new Rules and Regulations.
Charlie doesn’t understand why there cannot be winter burials. They had been done in the past. While doing research for the Rules and Regulations we looked at the surrounding towns. The smaller towns nearby do not allow winter burials. Larger towns have equipment to facilitate winter burials such as heaters and covers to thaw the ground for digging. When the roads in a cemetery are not paved, there can be damage to the roadways during mud season and when there is snow. When there is snow on the ground, it can also be more difficult to find the proper location of a lot. We had received complaints of snow being put upon a grave while a grave nearby was prepared for a burial. Given the damage that can occur with winter burials, we feel it is better to wait for improved weather.
The annual Cemetery Trustees Session will be held June 19th at the Holiday Inn in Concord from 8:30AM-12:00PM. Doreece will RSVP that the three trustees will attend the meeting.
We received a letter requesting the purchase of a 12-lot parcel in the South Yard Cemetery from a family from out of town but with ties to a family in Wilton. Given the limited space in our cemeteries and the family does not fit the term “immediate family members”, we have to deny the request. (Section II Part C) Doreece will reply by letter to the family.
Lime for the grounds has been ordered. Production of lime was delayed due to all the rain the area has received. When the lime is available, it will be delivered.
A form was received from the Cremation Society of New Hampshire concerning the receipt and placement of a veteran marker. Jim has signed for the Cemetery Trustees that the stone will be flat and made of granite. Doreece will contact Steve for his signature as the person who will accept delivery and place the marker. The form will then be mailed back to the Cremation Society.
Doreece gave the trustees an updated list of Action Items.
Maureen worked on Right to Inter documents for the Laurel Hill, South Yard and Vale End Cemeteries. The Trustees will review the documents and discuss them at the next meeting.
The next meeting will be Monday, May 21st, 2007 at the Town Office at
7 PM.
