HERITAGE COMMISSION
Meeting for July 26, 2005

The meeting was called to order on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at 7:30 pm at the Wilton Public Library. Present were Stanley Young, Michael Dell'Orto, Corinne Blagbrough, Phyllis Tallarico and Nancy Clark.

The minutes from the June 28 meeting were read and approved.

The Treasurer reported a balance of $963.86.

Commission members discussed two further sites for historic marker signs: the Town Pound and the Russell Hill Road Red Bridge. It was decided to order the Town Pound sign and to work on the wording and dates of the Russell Hill sign. Corinne also suggested South Yard and Vale End Cemeteries as suitable candidates for markers.

The Commission discussed a e-mail from Spencer Brookes requesting input from the HC in re the Wilton Natural Resources Inventory. In anticipation of future development in town, this inventory will spotlight and detail significant sites and assets both natural and historic. Stanley displayed a Historical/Cultural Resource Inventory including bridges, dams, stone walls, cemeteries, mills, roads, markers, houses, barns and buildings and Commission members made some additional recommendations.

Under New Business, the Commission discussed the need to complete the application form for the Town Pound sign prior to going before the Planning Board. The HC is waiting for the sign to be delivered before finalizing details of height, dimensions, materials used, etc.

Corinne recommended that the town buy two books: Exploring Stone Walls, A Field Guide to NE Stone Walls and Stone Walls, both works written by Robert M. Thomson. A discussion of the importance and the appeal of New England's stone walls followed.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,
Nancy Clark, Secretary
