HERITAGE COMMISSION
Minutes for Aug. 23, 2005

The meeting was called to order on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005 at the Wilton Public Library. Present were Stanley Young, Phyllis Tallarico, Michael Dell'Orto, Corinne Blagbrough, Don Channing and Nancy Clark.

The minutes were read and approved after the name of the author of two works on stone walls was corrected.

The treasurer reported a balance of $1,033.87.

Commission members received an update on historic markers. The sign for the old Russell Hill Bridge has been ordered and will read, Old Russell Hill Bridge. Evidence suggests there has been a bridge on this site since the mid 1700s. In the mid 1800s, the existing bridge was washed out in a flood and replaced with a boxed pony-truss style wooden bridge similar in structure to a covered bridge. In the 1930s, this bridge was completely rebuilt using new materials but following the old design. It is now one of two bridges of this style still standing in Hillsborough County.

Commission members received a further update on the Natural Resource Inventory. Stanley and Michael attended the Conservation Commission meeting and learned that the SPNIF will provide a map which can be marked by Commission members to designate sites of natural and historic significance. This map, when completed, will update the master plan and show all sensitive areas in town, indicating what remaining available land is developable and what land should be left as it is.

Following the recent sale of the Odd Fellows Hall, the Heritage Commission was offered items and photographs which have been removed from the building which will now be used for a different purpose. Stanley, Michael and Phyllis took possession of photographs, books, certain papers, membership rolls and portraits of past Grand Masters. The order's flag and charter will most likely also be turned over to the town when the organization has been de-chartered.

There was no new business.

At 8 pm, the Commission adjourned upstairs to the Historic Rooms for a documentation demonstration by Michael.

Respectfully Submitted,
Nancy Clark, Secretary
